Since the launch of the original Deore XT groupset in 1980, Shimano has built a reputation for reliability, durability, and functional design in mountain biking. The new XT BR-M8220 hydraulic disc brakes continue that tradition, developed specifically for aggressive trail and enduro riding where consistent power and control are essential.
Designed for Control and Clean Integration
The BR-M8220 features a redesigned brake lever with the oil reservoir positioned parallel to the handlebar. Combined with a revised hose outlet, this creates a cleaner cockpit appearance and improved cable routing.
A closer lever pivot point allows the blade to follow the natural arc of your finger more effectively.
This improves ergonomics and reduces hand fatigue, particularly on longer descents. The additional contact point near the grip increases lever stability, minimising flex and delivering a more direct, consistent braking feel.
Tool-free reach adjustment is handled by a rotary dial, allowing riders to fine-tune lever position quickly and easily.
Updated Servo Wave Technology
Shimano’s updated Servo Wave mechanism increases braking power while reducing the amount of force required at the lever.
Initial lever movement quickly brings the pads into contact with the rotor, followed by a progressive increase in power.
The result is:
- Less hand effort under heavy braking
- Improved modulation and control
- A stable and consistent bite point
Low Viscosity Mineral Oil System
The BR-M8220 uses a revised sealing system and is designed exclusively for Shimano’s new low viscosity (LV) mineral oil.
Benefits include:
- More consistent performance across a wide temperature range
- Reduced brake fade on long descents
- Improved stability of the pressure point
- Faster hydraulic response between lever and caliper
The system connects via the proven SM-BH90 hydraulic hose, which balances flexibility for clean routing with efficient power transfer.
4-Piston Enduro Caliper
The compact 4-piston caliper delivers high stopping power suitable for enduro and aggressive trail riding. While visually refined and low-profile, it provides strong and consistent braking performance in demanding terrain.
Revised brake pads are designed to reduce noise and minimise rattling on rough trails. Cooling fins, combined with the caliper’s aluminium construction, help dissipate heat effectively under sustained braking.
