Description

The Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay Carbon 70 is one of the best all-round E-MTBs in our range.

It’s also one of our most versatile E-MTBs too. It’s designed for new and experienced riders that love adventure.

Consider the Instinct Powerplay C70 if you’re looking for a premium performance electric mountain bike.

This build uses (almost) the best from Shimano parts and Fox suspension paired to a carbon-fibre frame. The Dyname motor puts out 108Nm and is paired to a 720Wh battery.

What is the Instinct Powerplay Carbon 70?

In short, it’s a high-powered, very capable Trail bike.

That means it can handle smooth, technical, low-speed and high-speed trails. The Instinct Powerplay makes riding most trails easier.

Because:

Even though it’s a trail bike, it’s a heavy duty one.

This means the bike is super stable at speed. And the motor (made by Canadian brand Dyname) has very smooth, controlled power delivery.

Further:

The Instinct Powerplay C70 also has 4 different frame positions (called Ride 4). We’ll cover this in a sec.

Plus, it has 2 chain-stay positions.

Meaning:

You can make the rear of the Instinct longer for high-speed trails. Or 10mm shorter (which is massive) for tighter trails or jumps.

Who is the Instinct PP Carbon 70 for?

It’s for:

Riders who are already on an older electric mountain bike (either hardtail or dual-suspension) and want to upgrade to something with better power delivery, handling and components.

Riders new to mountain biking but want to start on something better. Especially because you don’t need to upgrade parts further down the track.

And experienced riders.

That’s because of how the Powerplay delivers power.

Power Delivery

Power is delivered exactly like how experienced riders would apply it on the trail.

As the pressure on the pedal increases, the Dyname motor puts out more power.

This means:

Sharp pedal pressure will lift the front wheel, easily getting it over tree roots, ledges and rocks.

Soft pedalling around tight switchbacks is also easier. Gentle pedal pressure makes the power delivery more controlled.

Also worth noting:

Is that Dyname 4.0 shuts off power instantly when you stop pedalling. There’s no motor overrun. And therefore you have more control pedalling into trail features like berms, jumps and drops.

Adjustable Geometry

The Instinct PP Carbon 70 frame can be adjusted in 4 different ways. Plus there are 2 chain-stay positions that make the rear of the bike shorter or longer by 10mm.

Each position subtly adjusts the steering angle, height of the bike and therefore how stable the bike feels.

Position 1 is the most stable. It’s the slackest (least vertical) steering angle and the lowest position the bike can be in.

Position 4 is the most responsive at low-speed such as climbing. It’s the steepest steering angle and tallest height for the Instinct.

Position 3 is Neutral which is a nice balance of both.

Next, you have the choice of 2 chain-stay positions.

The longer position is used on trails that demand more stability out of the bike. Use the shorter position for trails that are tighter or if you want to make the bike easier to jump.

The Instinct Build

Rocky Mountain uses premium high-grade carbon to produce the Instinct. It’s lightweight, uses more carbon and minimises glue (or resin). The smooth inside finish also means there’s no imperfections.

Voids, bubbles and wrinkles on the inside are minimised using Rocky Mountain’s manufacturing process.

This enhances both ride quality and frame durability.

Fox Suspension

Rocky Mountain has used Fox’s Performance level suspension for the Carbon 70 build.

The big Float 36 fork and heavy-duty Float X rear shock are easy to setup and feature critical suspension adjustments.

Both suspension units have:

  • Air pressure
  • Rebound
  • Compression

Air pressure is based on rider weight and preference. Some riders prefer their suspension firmer and others plush.

Rebound controls how fast the suspension returns after it’s pushed down. This controls balance and grip.

Lastly, both suspension products have compression adjustments. The front has 3 levels of compression: soft, medium and firm. And the rear has 2 – soft or firm.

Shimano XT

Shimano XT 12-speed components are used throughout the Carbon 70 build.

XT is the second-best for Shimano. It sits at the sweet spot of Shimano’s mountain bike range, offering near-top-tier performance in a package built to handle demanding terrain.

Shimano XT hydraulic brakes feature a more powerful 4-piston caliper. This design provides stronger, more consistent braking on steep descents, with improved heat control for confidence on long, technical downhill.

Shimano’s Hyperglide+ (HG+) chain and cassette technology allows the bike to shift smoothly and accurately even while pedalling hard.

Whether climbing under load or accelerating out of corners, gear changes feel fast, controlled and seamless.
