Mongoose Switchback Comp Mountain Bike
The Mongoose Switchback Comp draws on over 40 years of riding heritage to deliver a capable, trail-ready hardtail at an accessible price point. Built around a Tectonic T1 aluminium frame with 29″ trail geometry and internal cable routing, the Switchback Comp is designed for riders who want a versatile mountain bike that handles both singletrack trails and long days on gravel paths without compromise. A replaceable derailleur hanger and 10mm x 135mm dropout round out a frame spec built for real-world durability and easy maintenance.
The Xposure suspension fork delivers 100mm of travel through a steel steerer with 9mm x 100mm QR axle – providing enough bump absorption for trail riding while keeping the front end predictable on gravel and hardpack. JAK 7 mechanical disc brakes front and rear with 160mm aluminium rotors deliver consistent, reliable stopping in all weather conditions – a significant advantage over rim brakes on variable Australian trail surfaces.
Drivetrain duties are handled by a 2×7-speed setup – a Prowheel aluminium 36/22T crankset on a square taper cartridge bottom bracket, paired with Microshift TS39 Thumb Tap shifters and a Shimano TY-300 rear derailleur. A 13-34T freewheel and KMC Z7 chain complete the drivetrain, offering a wide enough gear range for moderate climbs and trail riding without overcomplicating the setup. The 2x front chainring configuration gives riders meaningful range on longer gravel routes where a 1x system can fall short.
The cockpit runs an Xposure aluminium riser bar at 720mm width and 15mm rise on a 40mm, 7-degree threadless stem – a wide, confidence-inspiring setup for trail riding. Xposure double-wall aluminium 32H rims are laced to Xposure aluminium 6-bolt hubs with 14G stainless steel spokes, rolling on 27.5″ x 2.25″ tyres on smaller frame sizes and 29″ x 2.25″ on larger sizes – both in wire bead MTB spec. A Mongoose MTB saddle on an Xposure 30.9mm alloy seatpost and nylon platform pedals complete the build.
